SocialToo Status – Your Central Hub for Posting to Facebook and Twitter

Facebook has long been one of the best places to connect with family and friends and update what you are doing. Now, new tools and communities have grown, such as Twitter, and you may want to update your friends on those networks as well. It has become simply too difficult to manage all this from Facebook, that is until now. Today we’re announcing SocialToo Status.
SocialToo Status makes Facebook your central hub for posting updates to the networks you belong to. Via a simple app you install on your Facebook profile and home page, you can now use your existing status update box (or “Publisher”) in Facebook to share your updates to Twitter, any Facebook Fan Page you manage, and even your own personal wall – on a post-by-post basis. This new tool enables you to control who sees your updates, when you want, for every single status update you publish to Facebook.
When you publish via SocialToo Status, your updates appear in your personal stream, along with a link to each destination we also sent the status update to. This helps promote your other Facebook Pages and Twitter account, and gives others a sense of whom else you are speaking to. The little green SocialToo quote icon with each post also helps your status updates stand out – we do no promotion of SocialToo in your updates so it looks just like a normal status update. Our goal is to do all we can to help promote discussion for each post you publish, and at the same time give you the control in a single interface to tell where those updates end up. We think that’s pretty powerful!
Here’s how you get started – it’s actually quite simple:
- Go to http://socialtoo.com and click on the “Facebook App” link in the upper-right corner – you’ll want to hit “allow” on the prompts it asks you so we can properly publish status updates to your stream.
- Once the app is added to your account, you’ll notice on both your home page and profile page (you can update from either location) a new green SocialToo Status quote icon in the “attachments” section. You’ll probably have to hit the down “more” arrow to get to it. The more you use it, the more likely it will appear outside that drop down in the future!
- Click on the green quote icon, and a new SocialToo Status-branded Publisher will appear. Congrats – you’re all set up!
If you have not yet associated your Twitter account, a “sign in with Twitter” button will show up in the new SocialToo Status Publisher. You’ll want to click on that and associate the Twitter account to publish to from Facebook. It will only go to this account when you check the box (you’ll see this in a bit). Also, if you want to publish to the Facebook Pages you administer, just go to the link in the new publisher box that it prompts you with, and approve each Page you want to publish to.
Now, every time you send an update to Facebook, click on the little SocialToo Status green chat icon, select Twitter and/or the Facebook Pages you want it to go to (or none of them), and it will go to each one you select. The power of Facebook Status updates are in your hands now with SocialToo Status. Let us know what you think!
You can see the full howto with screenshots at http://apps.facebook.com/socialtoo/status. This is only the beginning!

Very cool, but one thing that most apps (including this one) seems to neglect is that each service formats its status updates differently.
I share a lot of links in twitter and facebook. In facebook I get the nice visual preview of the link, so I always share that way. On twitter, I just give a link.
It'd be nice if SocialToo took different templates into consideration and allowed you to post a more media-rich version to facebook while just passing on a link to twitter and other text-only services.
Nice app though! I'm going to give it a shot.

Thanks Eli! We're definitely working on that right now – hopefully very
soon you'll see that as well! I intend to take full advantage of what
Facebook has to offer and customize it for each network you need to publish
to.

Nice feature. However, this will be made obsolete as soon as FBook rolls this out to everyone – not just paage admins. Thanks tho.

The app works great. I especially like the “tag” feature that will send a notification to a FB friend of your status update.

Thanks Kevin! The friend tagging is new – we just added that last night. Glad you like it!

Nice app, but there appears to be no way to change what Twitter account is associated with the account. So, if you happen to be logged into your company's Twitter account and forget, and you click to login to Twitter, you have now linked your company' Twitter account to your personal Facebook account. Not good. And, there appears to be no way to actually change this to the correct Twitter account. Only option, uninstall I suppose.
Please add an option to change the Twitter account, or add a new one. Thanks.
Comment by WisTex — August 25, 2009 @ 5:22 pm
Apparently uninstalling does not work either. It appears the incorrect Twitter account is permanently connected to my SocialToo account.
Comment by WisTex — August 25, 2009 @ 5:40 pm
Apparently you can change it. After 30 minutes of searching (because there are no directions) you can go to socialtoo.com and change it. You cannot change it within the Facebook app itself, and there are no directions on how to do so.

I think this is incredibly cool and have already installed the app on my Facebook page. But I want to link it to my fan page as well. And this note comes up when I click on the app:
You still manage Fan Pages that do not appear here. To be able to post to those pages you must go to the app home page and click on the link to give permission.
However, when I go to click on the app home page, it's not clear how to give permission to access my fan page.
Any advice?
Thanks,

I really like this app. I'm sure it'll be useful on a number of fronts. My question is whether it is possible to post FROM a FB page one administers. I know I can post from my personal profile to my “fan” page and from my personal profile to any Twitter account I own, but can I publish FROM the fan page to Twitter?
Thanks again. Great stuff, folks!
Comment by smcaliendo — August 26, 2009 @ 12:50 pm
Evan, that's moved over to the SocialToo Status page. Just go to
http://apps.socialtoo.com/socialtoo/status, and the link to give
authorization to your Pages should be on that page (including screenshots).
I'll fix that link.

Comment by jessestay — August 27, 2009 @ 12:33 am
smcaliendo, that's a great idea. It's not possible at the moment, but I'll
see what we can do.
Comment by jessestay — August 27, 2009 @ 12:35 am
Thanks so much. The timing of this is so strange, though, because just a few hours ago a note popped up on my Facebook Fan page telling me that I could now connect it to my Twitter account. It works great, so I'm all set with the FB app, but still, yours is very cool and would be a nice addition for folks, too because it works a little bit differently and is more flexible for folks with multiple accounts.
Thanks again for being responsive. Best wishes!

If you're already updating Facebook via Twitter, and you add this app, will this app cause a double update on Facebook? (In other words, if I use Socialtoo to update my Twitter, will the Twitter in turn update my Facebook page, causing duplication?
Comment by Andrew Poretz — August 27, 2009 @ 12:42 pm
Andrew, yes, it will double post. Unfortunately we can't control that -
it's something the app developers of the Twitter to Facebook app need to
account for before posting to Facebook. You may try something like
tweetpo.st to filter your Twitter messages that go to Facebook so only those
marked with #fb show up on Facebook. That would fix your problem.

jesse thanks for the cool app. but i wonder if i'm doing something wrong. i fill out my new status on my profile pg on fb then click on the socialtoo icon, choose my twitter acct and hit publish. the new status goes on my wall, feed and on twitter, but does not change the status at the top of my profile. it still reads the previous status. is this a bug? i have to post it again to get it up there. (i've already done this)
i've put the url for my profile in the field below.
Comment by ben rubin — September 1, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
Ben, currently it only goes to your feed. The reason for that is that if we
post to your status it will also send a duplicate post to your feed. With
the Facebook API there is no way to turn off that second feed update. I've
submitted a bug with Facebook and am awaiting their response. We do update
the status of Pages though, and I'm brainstorming a few other ideas that may
allow that to work.
Comment by jessestay — September 1, 2009 @ 6:45 pm
the app only partially works for me. From the profile page I make an update, both my twitter and fan page options come up and I check both, it posts to my profile page and twitter BUT NOT the fan page. It even says on the profile page that it updated to the fan page but does not. I am the admin so that isn’t an issue. Did I miss a setting?
Comment by matt — October 13, 2009 @ 8:55 am
Matt, if you try again it should work. Some times if Facebook has a hiccup it can cause issues like that.
Comment by Jesse Stay — October 13, 2009 @ 11:56 am
I must be doing something wrong. I added the SocialToo app to my profile & several of the Pages I administer as soon as it was launched, but have never had the functionality described above. Everything posted to my pages is automatically posting to Twitter, even when I don’t want it to.
After getting frustrated with the functionality issues, I decided I was better off removing the app and just doing the posts to both FB and Twitter manually. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get it removed. I’ve taken if off my Pages and my profile, yet somehow it’s still posting on Twitter every time I post an update to my Page.
Jesse, can you please help?
Comment by Alissa Sheley — October 20, 2009 @ 12:41 pm
Alissa, are you sure you don’t have someone else’s app installed? If you’ve removed it there’s no way for us to do that, and we never send it automatically to Twitter for you. It’s off by default – you would have to check a box and load the SocialToo Status attachment for it to do that.
It sounds like you may have installed another application that could be doing that. You may want to look at your apps in Facebook in the applications drop-down under “Edit Applications” and also under your Twitter app preferences by de-authorizing apps until it stops. We’ll never send status updates to Twitter from Facebook unless you check that box, on a per-status update basis.
Comment by Jesse Stay — October 20, 2009 @ 12:46 pm
Thanks for the quick response Jesse! I started doing some digging and I believe you’re correct, the culprit was not in fact SocialToo, but instead the Facebook app, Facebook to Twitter. I will be reinstalling SocialToo because I think it’s a very handy tool, as long as I can use it at my discretion.
Thanks again!

Hiya,
Nice app. Would it be possible to though to keep the settings for the ‘auto post to twitter’ stored somewhere? Clicking the droplist and selecting the SocialToo item to expand, and selecting the ‘post to twitter box’ .. is gonna eat me up eventually
